Long before golfers walked these fairways, the valley was home to ranchers, miners, and the historic Durango & Silverton Railroad. Their legacy still echoes through the valley today, where the whistle of the famous steam train can occasionally be heard drifting across the course.

Designed by renowned architect Ken Dye and opened in 1993, Dalton Ranch blends an American links-style philosophy with the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Rather than forcing the land to fit the course, Dye allowed the terrain to dictate the routing, creating generous fairways, strategic bunkering, and greens that reward thoughtful shot-making while remaining enjoyable for golfers of every skill level.

Although the mountain scenery immediately captures your attention, the course itself is equally memorable. Eleven holes play alongside or across the Animas River, while panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains accompany nearly every shot. Wide landing areas invite aggressive drives, but carefully placed bunkers, water hazards, and subtly contoured greens ensure every hole presents a strategic decision.

The closing stretch provides one of the most memorable finishes in Colorado golf. As the river winds beside the fairways and the mountains rise dramatically in the background, golfers are treated to scenery that rivals any destination course in the West. Hole 16, the club's signature hole, showcases everything Dalton Ranch is known for—beautiful water, pristine conditioning, and spectacular mountain views.

At an elevation of 6,570 feet, the thinner mountain air allows the ball to travel noticeably farther, adding another unique element to the round. Built from the roots of Texas golf tradition.

In 1969, legendary Fort Worth businessman and golf pioneer Marvin Leonard founder of Colonial Country Club and Shady Oaks donated rolling land along Squaw Creek to the General Dynamics Recreation Association. Two years later, renowned Texas architect Ralph Plummer opened an 18-hole layout routed through towering pecans, live oaks, and more than 60 feet of natural elevation change west of Fort Worth.

Squaw Creek quickly became a gathering place for North Texas golf culture. Tuesday night leagues became local legend, with players once using car headlights around the final green to finish matches after sunset.

Floods tested it. Droughts challenged it. But the course endured.

In 2015, Texas architect John Colligan led a restoration of the Plummer classic, modernizing greens, fairways, and practice facilities while preserving the original routing along the creek and 14-acre lake.

Today, Squaw Creek remains one of North Texas' enduring public golf traditions where classic architecture, Texas resilience, and generations of golfers still meet along the creek banks.
