Long before a golf ball was ever struck here, the rugged canyons north of Watonga were home to the Southern Cheyenne.
For generations, this landscape provided shelter, water, and grass for their horses. Among those who called this place home was Henry Roman Nose, a respected Cheyenne leader who eventually settled with his family in the canyon.
When Roman Nose State Park opened in 1937, it carried his name—a connection to the land and its history that remains today.
And tucked within that remarkable landscape is one of Oklahoma's most distinctive golf courses.
Roman Nose Golf Course opened in 1959, with its original nine holes designed by legendary Oklahoma golf architect Floyd Farley. In 1998, architect Tripp Davis led an expansion that added nine more holes, creating the 18-hole course golfers experience today.
At 6,188 yards from the back tees and playing to a par 70, Roman Nose doesn't look particularly intimidating on the scorecard.
But don't let the yardage fool you.
This is a golf course where accuracy matters.
Fairways climb, fall, and wind through rugged canyon terrain. Thick brush and steep slopes wait beyond the short grass, while elevated greens, uneven lies, and dramatic changes in elevation make club selection a challenge.
And then there are the blind shots.
Several holes ask you to hit toward fairways or greens you can't completely see, forcing you to trust your yardage and choose your line carefully. A good drive can put you in perfect position. A miss in the wrong direction can leave you searching for a golf ball—or reaching into the bag for another one.
As one golfer put it, “If you're not hitting your driver straight, you better bring plenty of golf balls.”
The challenge becomes even more apparent on the back nine, where the terrain produces one memorable hole after another. There is very little here that feels flat, ordinary, or predictable.
And then there's the par-3 17th.
Surrounded by the rugged landscape that defines Roman Nose, it's a hole that golfers repeatedly single out as one of the highlights of the course—and a fitting example of what makes this place special.
The same terrain that makes Roman Nose difficult is also what makes it beautiful. One moment you're playing through a narrow canyon corridor; the next, the landscape opens in front of you, revealing views that hardly look like the Oklahoma most people imagine.
That's what makes Roman Nose different.
